Some videos make you laugh. Others make you squirm. The sketches created by Jesse and Mike often elicit both of those reactions. Across more than ten years, the brotherly pair has released hundreds of videos on their channel, but they are best known for their efforts in the horror comedy genre, where their slapstick, fast-paced, gross-out style has led the way to over a million subscribers and upwards of 1.3 billion views. To celebrate their digital achievements, Jesse and Mike let us know what inspires their macabre brand of comedy.

Tubefilter: How does it feel to have one million subscribers? What do you have to say to your fans?

Jesse and Mike: To have one million subscribers feels absolutely amazing! It’s an incredible feeling to know that you have a million viewers that enjoy the videos that you love to make. We’ve been creating content on YouTube for a while so it’s something that we are extremely grateful for. We definitely have the best viewers on the Internet! We try to reply to as many viewers’ comments as we possibly can throughout the day to thank them. If they take the time to watch our content, we like to thank them for watching it. To all the members of the JesseAndMike Tribe, thank you so much!

TF: What does your creative process look like? How much time does it take for you to make a particular video?

JM: As soon as we upload a video, our creative process starts on the next video right away. We toss around some ideas for a video and once we have that, we start the script writing process. While we’re scripting an idea, we also start making the props we’ll be using in the video. About 90% of the time we make our own props that we use in our videos. Then we start filming the script and getting all the shots and scenes that we need which takes about a day or two. Finally, we start editing which takes about two full days. It takes a full week of nonstop work for each video and we love every second of it!

TF: Have you guys always made videos together? What were your childhoods like?

JM: Our childhoods were awesome! We’ve always made videos together. The first time we filmed anything was when we borrowed our parents’ camcorder years and years ago and went outside to film a short horror movie that we came up with. Looking back on it, we aren’t sure how good it was but we had fun making it and eventually made another. Then we wanted to create content that people found funny. We were then at the point where we wanted to take it further so we saved up and bought a better camera and editing software, and things like that which eventually led to our YouTube channel and first YouTube video.

TF: Why do you think you guys work well together as a pair?

JM: We think we work so well together because we have the exact same sense of humor and same tastes. When we’re creating a video, we always know and understand what each other sees and wants in the finished content that we’re working on. We never get to the point where one of us sees something this way and the other sees it that way. We’re always on the same page with everything we’re doing and that helps tremendously when you’re working with someone.

TF: Your videos are often gross, macabre, creepy-crawly, and gory. What draws you to horror comedy?

JM: What draws us to horror comedy is that we love ridiculous situations, because when you’re in a situation like that, anything and everything is possible. Like everyone else, we don’t like anything boring, and with horror comedy everything is unexpected, louder, more fun which makes creating content really fun and awesome. We love it!

TF: What sort of special effects do use use to simulate the injuries you guys get in your videos?

JM: When it comes to effects, we love practical effects. Even when watching movies we are drawn to movies with practical effects over movies full of CGI. There’s just something about practical effects that make a movie better, so when we’re working on content, we love to include that in what we’re working on. We make almost all of our effects by using anything we can find. We have storage bins full of props that we’ve made, and materials for props that we plan to make for future videos.

TF: In all the years you’ve been on YouTube, what would you say is the most significant way your videomaking style has changed?

JM: We’ve definitely evolved in certain ways when it comes to our videos. For example, we’ve gotten better at knowing what we want in a video and what not to put in a video, so the viewer is always interested in the video and entertained throughout. We can’t wait to see how we evolve some more in the future!

TF: What are some categories you haven’t yet explored that you would like to break into?

JM: We’re always on the lookout for new topics and content ideas that fit in with our channel. Whenever we’ve found new categories for our channel, they’ve always come to us along the way when working on our videos. For us, it’s something that has to come to you. You can’t really go out searching for it. When it comes to you, you just know it.

TF: What’s next for your channel? Any fun plans?

JM: We have a lot of great ideas and big videos on the way! Our videos are going to be getting a lot bigger, better, and even crazier in the coming future! We’re really excited to share the new videos with our viewers and can’t wait for them to see what we have coming up! It’s an exciting time to be a part of the JesseAndMike Tribe!
