The Latest YA Novel Getting An Awesomeness Films Adaptation Is ‘Our Chemical Hearts’

Since its launch last year, Awesomeness Films has made movie versions of YA novels a key part of its strategy. The filmmaking division of digital studio Awesomeness TV has picked up at least three adaptations of teen fiction, and on June 28th, it announced a fourth: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Awesomeness Films has scooped up the film rights for Our Chemical Hearts, the upcoming debut of author Krystal Sutherland.

Awesomeness Films’ acquisition of Our Chemical Hearts’ film rights resembles its deal to adapt another YA novel, Spontaneous. Both transactions closed before the release of the books at their respective centers, and both authors have earned comparisons to YA standard bearer John Green, whose books The Fault In Our Stars and Paper Towns have helped catalyze the rising trend of feature films based on teen fiction.

In Sutherland’s case, Our Chemical Hearts features the same theme of “first love” that often shows up in Green’s work. The new book, published by Penguin Random House, is expected to arrive on shelves on October 4th.

“Krystal Sutherland is a breakout young writer, whose voice uniquely captures the emotional journey of falling in love for the first time,” said Awesomeness Films president Matt Kaplan. “We are excited to be working with her at Awesomeness Films and look forward bringing Our Chemical Hearts to life.”

Awesomeness Films has not yet announced any casting or release information for the screen version of Our Chemical Hearts. Based on the studio’s previous YA adaptations, however, don’t be surprised if some social media stars land roles in the upcoming film.
