YoungMinds, a London-based charity committed to improving the mental health of children and adolescents, has tapped YouTube luminary Daniel Howell to serve as an ambassador.
The appointment arrives on the heels of a video that Howell, 26, posted on Oct. 10 for World Mental Health Day, detailing his own experiences with clinical depression. In the video, Howell — who is one-half of the beloved YouTube duo Dan and Phil alongside his best friend and frequent collaborator Phil Lester — discussed the process of finding the correct anti-depressant dosage as well as the game-changing impact of entering therapy.
“I couldn’t do it alone,” Howell says in the video, titled Daniel And Depression. “Once I acknowledged this, I told people I trusted about it and that I wanted to work to get better. And just being able to tell someone can make all the difference.”

As an ambassador, Howell — who counts 6.5 million subscribers on his YouTube channel and formerly served as BBC Radio 1 host — will help raise awareness and work to improve the standard of care for young people going through mental health issues. He joins YoungMinds’ existing roster of ambassadors, including news presenter Cathy Newman, actress Michelle Collins, fellow social media star Jada Sezer, former cricketer Mike Yardy, and more.
