Lofi Girl’s iconic headphones are now real–and on (digital) store shelves

Now anyone can be on Lofi Girl‘s beat.

Nearly a decade ago, French producer/musician Dimitri Somoguy launched a 24/7 music streaming channel on YouTube. Called “ChilledCow,” it was a relaxed affair, intended to be background music (all made by real human artists and used with permission from those artists) for folks studying or working.

And listeners weren’t studying alone. ChilledCow’s mascot was a Ghibli-esque animated girl curled up in her desk chair, listening to music while endlessly taking notes, working on a laptop, or reading with her cat tucked against the window behind her.

In 2021, Somoguy officially renamed the channel Lofi Girl, and since then the chillaxing leading lady (whose name is Jade) has seen her world expanded. She’s become the central figure in a growing cast, has an associated recordthat produces the next generation of lofi songs, and ‘she’ even handed out $50,000 college scholarships to 10 students.

Her newest venture is a big push into physical merch: Her iconic headphones have been made real and are on sale for $225 through the Lofi Girl shop.

“Cream shells, red trim, scalloped black rim. Jade’s headphones, brought into the real world,” the product description reads.

The headphones promise up to 65 hours of listening, 30 dB noise-cancelling, and two-device pairing. Buyers can also pick up a case for $39.99 and an extra set of earpads for $24.99.

The Lofi team has introduced other physical merch in the past–vinyl records, hoodies, enamel pins, notebooks, backpacks, keypads, and plushies, to name a few–but this is the first time it’s translated a signature aspect of Jade herself into something tangible.

Coming out with a product that’s (a) branded and identifiable, and (b) usable for your specific niche of viewers is not a new concept. We’ve heard years of chatter about how creators and digital-born brands need to move past just putting out mugs and T-shirts.

But Lofi Girl has taken an unusually long route. Instead of cashing in on the brand a few months after it went viral, the Lofi team took its time and–from what we can tell–made a quality product that competes, technically and design-wise, with other brands’ offerings. The fact that its headphones advertise Lofi Girl through looks and branding almost seems incidental.

We’re curious to see if music-heads will have these looped around their necks in the months to come. As always, though, you don’t need special headphones to tune into Jade’s jams.
