Three days after the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded, Alphabet reported its quarterly earnings, and that particular sporting event helped YouTube achieve significant growth. The video platform saw its ad revenue rise 13% year-over-year to reach $11 billion. Both of those numbers exceeded analyst expectations.

Overall, Alphabet’s total revenue rose 24% year-over-year during Q2 2026, topping out at $119.8 billion. Though Alphabet enjoyed financial upticks across the board, its stock fell by 4% after the conclusion of the earnings call. Increased capital expenditures for 2026 likely triggered that downturn.

Increasing AI-related spending from Big Tech firms has sparked some hestitation among shareholders, but as far as YouTube is concerned, the second quarter of 2026 brought good news. During the earnings call, Google boss Sundar Pichai celebrated the massive audience that ventured to YouTube to take in content related to the World Cup.

“Month over month, people turn to YouTube for major world events, with over 1.7 billion unique viewers watching World Cup-related videos during the FIFA World Cup,” Pichai said. YouTube had previously reported that 550 million of its World Cup viewers tuned in from their TV sets.

YouTube offers a lot more than just sports highlights and live broadcasts, but as the platform looks to sustain its Q2 growth, those categories will remain crucial. As the summer turns into the fall, YouTube will shift its focus from world football to American football. Its acquisition of the Sunday Ticket package has made it a frequent destination for NFL fans and a dependable revenue generator for its parent company.

The viewership on live sports events explains why platforms are so eager to secure the rights to those broadcasts, but those numbers also portend some friction for YouTube’s sports push moving forward. The platform reportedly backed out of an NFL broadcast deal after a coveted Australia game went to Netflix, and TikTok is ready to challenge YouTube’s status as the go-to source for NBA highlights on social media.

As it looks to shrug off that competition, Alphabet will keep the deals coming. Outside of the sports world, YouTube is slated to become the official broadcaster of the Oscars beginning in 2029.
