The Duolingo owl gets a glow-up in his own comic

Look up in the sky — it’s a bird, it’s a plane…it’s the Duolingo owl!

Duo, the bright green mascot for the world’s most popular language-learning app, is now the star of his very own webcomic. Duo Unleashed, as the series is known, is a five-part saga hosted by the digital webcomic platform WEBTOON.

All five installments of Duo Unleashed dropped on WEBTOON on October 15. Duolingo Creative Content Coordinator Karen Buchanan authored the comic. Kylie Hunsinger, a veteran of WEBTOON originals like “Madame Outlaw,” provided the art. Duolingo and WEBTOON will join forces to promote Duo Unleashed at New York Comic Con, where Duo will host meet-and-greets. The convention begins on October 17.

Duo’s Comic Con appearance should be a hot ticket given the cultural cachet of the character and the app he represents. After Duolingo’s breakout in the mid 10s (when its valuation rose to $700 million), the company trained its eye on original content by hiring YouTube vet Tim Shey in 2018. Shey left Duolingo in 2024, but not before the app — and its owl mascot in particular — became a generational touchstone

for Gen Z.

As upstarts like Revyze compete with Duolingo in the world of educational apps, the language-learning leader is turning to WEBTOON to raise its profile once again. The webcomic platform, which has unlocked millions for its creator community since its 2021 union with digital literature platform Wattpad, has experience turning corporate avatars into webcomic heroes. That’s what it did with Wumpus, the mascot for server host Discord. Now Duo is taking center stage.

“This collaboration has provided us an exciting opportunity to introduce Duolingo and its dynamic cast of characters to WEBTOON’s audience of passionate global readers,” said Duolingo Head of Animation and Scripted Content Linda Simensky in a statement. “We loved getting to expand Duo’s story in this new space, and look forward to even more fans meeting him on WEBTOON.”

Readers who breeze through Duo Unleashed will have a reward waiting for them at the end. WEBTOON users who complete the series by November 12 will receive a one-month free trial of Super Duolingo, the app’s ad-free tier.
