OpenAI launches GPT Store to let users monetize their generative AI creations

OpenAI is looking to sustain the success of ChatGPT by introducing a new revenue stream. The Microsoft-backed tech company has introduced the GPT Store, where individuals and brands can distribute customized products powered by ChatGPT.

The GPT Store is accessible from within ChatGPT, the chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022. A tab labeled “Explore GPTs” offers a wide range of custom apps. Outdoorsy folks can get some AI-powered advice on local running routes through a tool created by AllTrails, while nerdier types can rely on a code assistant developed by Khan Academy. In total, dozens of Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) are available across categories like lifestyle, education, and productivity.

According to an OpenAI blog post, users have created three million custom GPTs so far. The GPT Store will offer a rotating selection of featured products, and anyone can add their GPTs to the marketplace by turning on public availability and verifying their Builder Profile.

For now, however, access to the GPT Store will be limited to paying ChatGPT customers. The first users who will gain access to the new store and those in the Enterprise and Team tiers. The former option is a premium plan

for individuals; the new Team subscriptions are meant to be shared among groups of co-workers.

By bringing ChatGPT to the masses, OpenAI is looking to breathe new life into the cultural phenomenon it spawned more than a year ago. ChatGPT was a viral sensation during its first few months of activity, but its traffic has flagged since then. Meanwhile, other tech companies are starting to catch up with OpenAI. TikTok parent ByteDance is reportedly working on an AI development tool that appears to resemble OpenAI’s custom GPT platform.

OpenAI has also dealt with internal strife to go along with its external challenges. Late last year, CEO Sam Altman was briefly replaced by former Twitch boss Emmett Shear. OpenAI employees responded mutinously to the change, resulting in Altman’s reinstatement days later.

Despite all that drama, generative AI is still a hot technology, and OpenAI remains an industry leader. Creators like Amouranth have shown the earnings potential of AI-powered products; through the GPT Store, other makers will be able to jump on board.
