The creator behind the animation channel GameToons is funding a graphic novel on Kickstarter

Cory Crater is opening up The Codex to decipher a gripping new tale. That’s the name of Crater’s new graphic novel, which seeks funding on Kickstarter beginning on August 15.

Crater’s name might not look familiar, but his videos are adored by ten million subscribers. The animator is the creator of three channels that satirize the characters and lore of video games: GameToons, SCP Animated, and NewScapePro. On GameToons, the most-watched of those three destinations, Crater has picked up more than 3.3 billion lifetime views.

GameToons fans will now get the chance to explore Crater’s first foray into the world of graphic novels. According to an official description of The Codex, the story follows “a deserter, druid, mutant, and cyborg-dog” as they traverse a post-apocalyptic landscape in search of an ancient demon.

“The Codex isn’t your ordinary post-apocalyptic world,” Crater said in a statement. “It is a fusion of dieselpunk, retrofuturism, and dark fantasy.” He shared a first look at the project in a trailer uploaded to his Hayburner Studios channel.

The Codex has spent more than two years in development, but Crater is finally ready to share it with the world. Given the size of his audience, he’s likely to fulfill his funding targets, and there are plenty of perks available for his backers. A limited-edition version of the graphic novel will be sent to anyone who contributes at least $60 to the Kickstarter campaign. Once The Codex hits shelves, hardcover copies will retail for $40 while paperbacks will cost $30.

Crater is not the first YouTube star to break into the world of graphic novels. Other creators who have embraced visual literature include Karl Jacobs, Ninja, and Smosh.
