Susan Wojcicki steps down as YouTube’s CEO, replaced by Neal Mohan

Susan Wojcicki is no longer CEO of YouTube.

“Today, after nearly 25 years here, I’ve decided to step back from my role as the head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health and personal projects I’m passionate about,” she said in a letter to Google employees that was posted publicly on YouTube’s company blog this afternoon.

Wojcicki, who’s been with Google since 1998 and CEO of YouTube since 2014, will be replaced by Neal Mohan, YouTube’s longtime chief product officer.

In her letter, Wojcicki laid out a long list of things she’s accomplished during her time at Google and YouTube: she co-created Google Image Search, led Google’s first Video and Book search teams, was involved in AdSense‘s creation, was part of the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions, was Google’s SVP of ads, and finally, of course, led YouTube through what was by far its most turbulent and growth-filled decade of existence.

But, while Wojcicki won’t be YouTube’s CEO anymore, she’s not leaving Google behind.

“[I]n the short term, I plan to support Neal and help with the transition, which will include continuing to work with some YouTube teams, coaching team members, and meeting with creators,” she said in her letter. “In the longer term, I’ve agreed with Sundar [Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google] to take on an advisory role across Google and Alphabet. This will allow me to call on my different experiences over the years to offer counsel and guidance across Google and the portfolio of Alphabet companies.”

Wojcicki added that she feels comfortable leaving now because “we have an incredible leadership team in place at YouTube.”

In a statement, Pichai concurred, saying Wojcicki has “built an exceptional team and has in Neal a successor who is read to hit the ground running and lead YouTube through its next decade of success.”

Wojcicki’s stepping down appears to be effective immediately.
