Benny Drama moves from Instagram to Amazon with a scripted comedy called ‘Overcompensating’

On platforms like Instagram and TikTok, Benito Skinner is known for impersonating celebrities and serving up glam looks. Now, the creator known as Benny Drama is gearing up for his biggest project yet. He will take the lead in Overcompensating, a scripted comedy he has sold to Amazon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Overcompensating is currently in development. Skinner penned the script for the project and will star as a football player from Idaho who is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality (hence the title). Skinner, a well-known figure in the queer community, attended TikTok’s Thrive with Pride concert during last year’s LA Pride festival.

One of the artists who performed during that concert will also provide music for OvercompensatingCharli XCX headlines a list of prominent partners who are working with Skinner on his Amazon debut. The indie media company A24 will produce the project, which boasts executive producers like Jonah Hill (through his company Strong Baby) and record exec Scooter Braun. If OVercompensating advances to a full series run, Scott King will serve as its showrunner.

“I am so proud of this project and can’t believe all the incredible people I get to make it with,” Skinner wrote on Instagram. “It’s hard to describe what a dream this is but I just want to say thank you for supporting me!!! I LOVE YOU and I know you are going to love this show it’s my baby and my favorite thing I’ve ever written.”

Skinner’s success on social media has afforded him access to a number of exclusive experiences. He was one of the creators who attended a White House briefing last year, and he made an appearance during Instagram’s inaugural Creator Week. He is represented by WME.

On both Instagram and TikTok, Skinner counts more than one million followers. On his YouTube channel, his fans can check out some of his best impressions, including his takes on The Kardashians and the cast of Queer Eye.
