During this year’s RTX convention, media company Rooster Teeth shared some exciting announcements regarding one of its flagship properties. RWBY, the anime-style series that first premiered nearly a decade ago, is getting a feature film adaptation. The movie will be a crossover with another franchise owned by Warner Bros. Discovery: DC Comics’ Justice League.
The film was announced during a panel at RTX, which brings thousands of fans to Rooster Teeth’s hometown of Austin, Texas. The RWBY x Justice League crossover movie will follow up a comic book series that mashes the two properties together. Variety noted that the upcoming motion picture — which is due out sometime in 2023 — will be animated by the team behind RWBY. Its story will be different from the one featured in the crossover comic books.
Since its 2013 premiere, RWBY has become wildly popular, thus encouraging Rooster Teeth and its creative partners to adapt the animated series across a number of different media. RWBY-inspired toys were unveiled in 2018, as were a series of YA novels based on the show. At this year’s RTX, Rooster Teeth shared the trailer for RWBY Arrowfell, a side-scrolling video game featuring characters from the titular franchise.

Meanwhile, the mainline RWBY series continues to roll along. Eight seasons have been released so far, and the ninth is on its way. At RTX, Rooster Teeth representatives shared a teaser for the new batch of episodes, which will see the light of day in “early 2023.”
RTX took place at the Austin Convention Center between July 1 and July 3. The IRL gathering first occurred in 2011, and since then, satellite conventions have been held in London and Sydney. The 2022 edition of RTX marked its return to an in-person format after a three-year delay necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rooster Teeth, which came under the WarnerMedia umbrella after a whirlwind series of acquisitions, was included in the media conglomerate’s high-profile merge with Discovery. DC Comics, meanwhile, is a longtime Warner subsidiary. Personally, I won’t be satisfied until the Rooster Teeth/DC Cinematic Universe features a battle between the former company’s podcast hosts and the latter company’s supervillains.
