Jamal Edwards, an early YouTuber and music entrepreneur, died on Sunday at age 31. His mother told the BBC that he had “passed away after a sudden illness.”
Edwards was the founder of SBTV, an online urban music hub that helped launch the careers of Ed Sheeran, Dave, Jessie J, and others.
SBTV’s name came from Edwards’ own rap moniker, SmokeyBarz, and its accompanying YouTube channel has amassed 1.2 million subscribers. It was home to early music videos from up-and-comers like Emeli Sande and Stormzy. SBTV initially focused on grime music, and then expanded to other genres.

Edwards was appointed a MBE (Member of the British Empire) for services to music in 2014.
The BBC notes that Edwards also harnessed his influence toward raising mental health awareness, funding youth centers, and supporting other young entrepreneurs. He authored a book titled Self Belief: The Vision: How to Be a Success on Your Own Terms, and was the founder of grassroots charity JE Delve, which provides youth clubs and work opportunities for young people in west London.
“We’ve lost a legend today,” YouTube tweeted. “Jamal Edwards was an inspiration to so many, supporting artists and shaping culture through SBTV. Sending our condolences to Jamal’s family and community.”
