VidCon 2021 Is Cancelled, VidCon 2022 Dates Announced

VidCon 2021 is off.

“We were so confident that we’d be able to put on the VidCon you know and love this October and could not wait to reconnect with all of you IRL,” Jim Louderback, VidCon’s general manager, said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, due to the recent increases in COVID-19 cases and evolving health and safety mandates, we have come to the difficult but right decision to cancel VidCon this October,” he added.

VidCon specifically cited concerns with the Delta variant, which appears to be more of a risk to kids than other COVID strains.

In the same announcement, VidCon said that it plans to hold its 2022 event June 22-25 at its usual venue, the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.

People who purchased single-day tickets to the 2021 event will receive full refunds by Sept. 3, 2021. All multiday tickets and merch packages not containing single-day tickets will be automatically transferred to the 2022 convention.

However, folks can also get refunds on multidays/merch: they just have to request their money back here by June 3, 2022.

This year’s event (VidCon’s eleventh convention to date) was to be a change-up, as it was the first year with TikTok as the convention’s title sponsor instead of longtime partner YouTube.

VidCon was also going to provide a separate track for long-distance attendees with virtual tickets–a method of programming that’s based on VidCon Now, the massive virtual offering that replaced its 2020 convention with livestreamed content.

When that track was announced, Louderback said said the long-distance developments were part of a new “hybrid digital and IRL model” for VidCon.
