New year, same number-one. In our first 2021 ranking of the top 50 most-viewed YouTube channels of the week across the globe, the Indian music and movie channel that dominated 2020 continued to pace the field. Meanwhile, American family channels surged up the charts, and those two countries — India and the USA — combined to occupy all of the top 15 spots in this week’s ranking.
T-Series received more views than any other YouTube channel during the seven-day period that included both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The Indian entertainment hub scored 897.3 million weekly views during that window, which also picking up its standard complement of one million new subscribers. While T-Series still hasn’t reached the billion-view threshold that Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes surpassed in 2020, the Indian world-beater is still the undisputed top dog in our global ranking.
Speaking of Cocomelon, the American nursery rhyme distributor put together a seven-day total of 785.7 million weekly views, good enough to clinch second place in our global chart. It led a streak of three family-friendly American channels that finished second, third, and fourth in our first January ranking. Kids Diana Show moved up one spot to third place after receiving 544.4 million weekly views, which represented a 4% viewership jump since our last global chart. But the big surprise was Like Nastya, a perennial entrant in our US-only top five, which has now cracked the uppermost global echelon after receiving 500.7 million weekly views. That figure was good for a 26% week-over-week traffic increase for the notable kiddie vlog.
Indian TV channel Sony SAB rounded out the worldwide top five thanks to its 468.7 million weekly views.
It’s hard to believe it’s been more than four-and-a-half years since the channel Pinkfong! Kids Songs and Stories first released its famous “Baby Shark Dance” video, which has since become the most viewed clip on YouTube. But the outrageous success of that inescapable earworm was only the beginning for Pinkfong. Since then, the South Korean operation has continued to attract viewers and work its way up our ranking of the top 50 most viewed channels of the week. In our latest chart, Pinkfong reached 16th place, making it the highest-listed channel not from the USA or India.
Pinkfong, like many other channels, is both consistent and prolific, uploading new content almost every day. Those tendencies have allowed it to thrive of late, as its latest totals include 212.5 million weekly views and a 9% week-over-week traffic increase.
But lets not lose sight of the real star here. The most successful video released by Pinkfong during our most recent measurement period is a Baby Shark clip, complete with song and dance. This one is a New Year’s version of the iconic ditty, featuring some cheerful holiday instrumentation. Plus, the countdown to a new year gives Pinkfong an opportunity to teach kids about numbers. Now that’s easy money.
