For most of 2020, one channel has held a vice grip on the top spot in our weekly ranking of the top 50 most-viewed US-based YouTube channels. In the last week of October, however, that channel surrendered its premium perch, with a kid-friendly vlog rising up to claim the number-one position.
Vlad and Niki offers viewers regular updates from the lives of its two titular boys, a pair of Russian-American brothers who are based, along with their family, in Florida. The channel is a regular top-five presence in our weekly rankings, but this week, it moved all the way up to number one, thanks to a seven-day period in which it received 800.7 million weekly views. That total was just big enough to supplant Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes, which previous held the number-one position but fell back to #2 after receiving 779.3 million weekly views, a drop of 16% since our last measurement period.
Positions three through five in our US-only chart belonged to the same three channels that occupied those spaces the week before. Kids Diana Show returned to the #3 spot and moved closer to the two channels above it, thanks to its 697.4 million weekly views and the 10% week-over-week viewership increase it experienced over the past seven days.
Two more kid-friendly channels re-ran their fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively. Like Nastya, yet another all-ages vlog, was fourth among US-based channels in our latest chart, adding 480.6 million weekly views to its lifetime total. Toys and Colors, which offers a digital play pen for YouTube’s youngest viewers, followed behind Like Nastya in fifth, thanks to its 377.1 million weekly views.
Ariana Grande, welcome back to the top 50.
The Florida-born starlet released a new music video this week, and its appeal was strong enough to make her YouTube hub the 28th most-viewed US YouTube channel of the week, up from 96th place a week ago. Her total viewership for the week surpassed nine digits before settling at 74.9 million weekly views, more than double what her channel accrued over our previous chart period.
The clip driving all this fresh traffic is the official music video for “Positions,” the title track off of Grande’s upcoming sixth studio album. While the three-minute pop track plays, we watch as Grande shifts back and forth between one role as a White House power player and another as a hard-working chef. The main appeal, of course, is Grande’s vocal prowess. The song highlights her impressive four-octave range as she offers some suggestive lyrics about switching positions.
Positions, the album on which this song will be featured, is due to be released on October 30th. When it arrives, we won’t be surprised to see Grande climb even high on our charts. After all, the “Positions” music video has needed only three days to accrue more than 37 million views.
