For the first time in months, there is a change at the top of our ranking of the top 50 most-viewed YouTube channels of the week. The Indian entertainment juggernaut that has paced the global field for months has now ceded its position at the top of the chart to an animation studio that appeals to young children with its nursery rhymes and other pieces of content.

As far as our Tubefilter charts are concerned, 2020 has belonged to two channels: Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes of the USA, and T-Series of India. Almost every week, those two channels have run first and second in our ranking of the 50 most-viewed channels worldwide. For the past few months, the top spot has belonged to T-Series, an Indian channel known for its music videos, but since our last chart seven days ago, T-Series’ viewership fell by 6% and Cocomelon’s rose by 6%. The resulted is that the kid-friendly animation studio, with its 916.3 million weekly views, now sits in first place, with T-Series and its 891 million weekly views falling back to second.
But this titanic twosome is no longer lapping the rest of the field. Vlad and Niki, a Floridian family vlog, is still #3 in our global chart, but thanks to a 13% week-over-week increase, it’s now just a smidge behind T-Series, counting 868 million weekly views.
After Vlad and Niki, there is a significant viewership drop down to #4. SET India, which earned a fourth-place finish for the second week in a row, added 698.4 million weekly views to its lifetime total. That’s a week-over-week dip of about 6% for the Sony-owned hub.
Finally, Kids Diana Show rounded out the top five for the second week in a row. The Ukranian-American family vlog finished our latest seven-day measurement period with 634.3 million weekly views.
SET India is not the only Sony-owned, India-based YouTube channel to reach this week’s global top 50. Another digital home for a terrestrial TV channel, Sony PAL, had a big week as well. Sony’s South Asian sister channel touted a week-over-week viewership jump of 24%, which allowed it to rise 12 spots in the global chart before topping out in 24th place. In total, Sony PAL received 144.1 million weekly views.
Like many other YouTube channels that have thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sony PAL has gotten a big boostie by posting full episodes of famous Indian TV shows. In particular, old episodes of the popular procedural CID (Crime Investigation Department) have received millions of views. This compilation, for example, is nearing a million views; it offers some highlights from 1,500-plus installments of CID that have aired thus far.
The popularity of CID explains not only the success of the Sony PAL YouTube channel but the success of SET India as well; the #4 channel in this week’s global charts often posts its own CID episodes, some of which have received more than 70 million views.
