For the third time in as many months, the top two finishers in our ranking of the Top 50 most viewed YouTube channels in the world have switched positions. The seesaw battle between a children’s animation studio and an Indian entertainment hub continues on; this week, its the latter destination that received a high seven-day view total than any other contender.
Over the past seven days, T-Series saw its viewership rise by 7%, while Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes experienced a 10% dip in its own traffic. Those trends were significant enough to vault the Bollywood video cache back into the #1 spot, where its 961.9 million weekly views top YouTube. Cocomelon’s weekly total of 814.6 million views is still astonishing, but the animation hub is closer to dropping back to #3 than to regaining the top position in the chart. Another Indian channel, SAB TV, is now within 100 million views of Cocomelon after registering 715.1 million weekly hits, which represents a 33% week-over-week uptick.
SET India, owned by Sony Entertainment Television, is the third Indian channel to place in the chart’s top four; the entertainment destination held onto the #4 position (which it claimed last week) thanks to 625.1 million weekly views. Rounding out the top five is Vlad and Niki, a family-friendly vlog based in the US. It moved up from #7 after seeing a 22% week-over-week viewership increase, which led it to 581.9 million weekly views.
This week was a big one for Disney music; on July 3, ta filmed version of the smash-hit musical Hamilton arrived for Disney Plus subscribers. Meanwhile, on YouTube, the DisneyMusicVEVO channel found its way into our global Top 50, ending up in 42nd place after sitting in 57th a week prior. Overall, the hub for iconic Disney ditties of the past and present picked up 110.5 million weekly views, which was 6% higher than the total it registered seven days ago.
The Disney canon contains so many popular songs that it’s hard to figure out which ones are responsible for this week’s uptick, but a few playlists available on the DisneyMusicVEVO channel offer some ideas. The Mouse House has taken advantage of our current socially-distanced landscape with a series of videos titled “Disney Work From Home.” Each clip reminds us of the day job of a well-known Disney hero; “Where You Are,” for example, depicts the duties required of Moana as a Polynesian princess.
Disney music is as timeless as it is catchy, so it’s not too uncommon to see these songs back in the Top 50, nor will we be surprised if the DisneyMusicVEVO channel sticks around in the rankings for a few weeks.
