The channel that ruled our Top 50 charts throughout May has been bumped from its perch atop our global ranking, but it is still ahead of the rest of the pack in its home country. A children’s animation studio claimed the top spot in this week’s ranking of the Top 50 US-based channels on YouTube.
Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes is the #2 YouTube channel in the world, but it’s #1 in America. The animation hub, based in Southern California and aimed at YouTube’s youngest viewers, received 823.8 million views this week, a total that put it nearly 180 million views ahead of its closest runner-up.
The second-place finisher in question is Kids Diana Show, an all-ages channel that picked up 644.9 million weekly views to maintain its #2 position in our US-only. In fact, the entire top five was unchanged, which means that the same two children’s entertainment destinations followed Kids Diana in spots three and four. Like Nastya ended up at #3 after a week in which it scooped up a total of 525.1 million views, while Vlad and Niki was number four once again. The Floridian family channel received 497.5 million views over the US-only chart’s most recent measured period.
And once again, WWE rounded out the top five. The most popular YouTube destination for pro wrestling fans notched 269.1 million weekly views over the past seven days.
A few months ago, news organizations were trending up in our US charts. Now, if the success of one of the most recent Top Gainers signifies anything, America has taken a break from the news-consuming phase of its collective quarantine and is checking out some cute animal videos instead. The Dodo, a fauna-oriented channel owned by the holding company Group Nine Media, was the 27th-most viewed American YouTube channel this week.
The Dodo’s jump up from 113th place was aided by the viral success of “Brave Mama Dog Asks Strangers To Save Her Babies” recorded in or around Mladenovac, Serbia. The upload is just what the title implies. And though it was uploaded on June 6 (during the timeframe for last week’s charts), a few million of its more than 5.9 million views came in the June 8 to June 14 window. A new episode in the Odd Couples series, which catalogs unexpected animal friendships, helped push up The Dodo’s numbers, too. In the episode in question, a tiny kitten gets adopted by a family and bonds with the family’s massive Labrador Retriever. This combination of big and small proved too cute for viewers to resist; the clip received 1.2 million views in its first six days of activity.
In total, The Dodo received 78.8 million weekly views over the past seven days. If there’s a conclusion we can definitively draw, it’s that cute animals are popular on the internet. Who knew?
