YouTubers Hank Green and Mark Oshiro are among the 40 storytellers selected for From a Certain Point of View, an official Star Wars anthology that retells The Empire Strikes Back from the perspective of various background characters.
Both Green and Oshiro are already published authors. Green–who has 3.31 million subscribers on Vlogbrothers, the channel he shares with older brother and fellow author, John–is the New York Times bestselling writer of 2018 sci-fi novel An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. Oshiro (10.8K subscribers on their channel, Mark Reads) is a Hugo-nominated media critic and young adult/middle grade author whose 2018 debut Anger Is a Gift won the American Library Association’s Schneider Family Book Award.
From a Certain Point of View is publishing this year to mark the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, which released in theaters May 21, 1980. In the anthology, Green “chronicles the life of a naturalist caring for tauntauns on the frozen world of Hoth,” while Oshiro “recounts the wampa’s tragic tale of loss and survival,” according to a statement posted
to Star Wars’ website.“When I was asked if I wanted to do this, I was both extremely excited and extremely nervous,” Green tweeted. “It’s a literal dream to be able to add to the lore of Star Wars.”
Oshiro, meanwhile, proclaimed their contribution is “absolutely one of the strangest things I’ve ever written.”
Other headlining writers include Tracy Deonn (a lore expert and author who featured in and co-wrote episodes of SyFy’s docuseries Looking for Leia), Martha Wells (author of the popular Murderbot Diaries series), Austin Walker (editor-in-chief of Vice’s gaming vertical, Waypoint), and sci-fi/video game writer Seth Dickinson.
From a Certain Point of View will bow Nov. 10.
