YouTube’s most-viewed channel finished tantalizingly close to 900 million weekly hits. Though that channel retained its hold on the top spot in our global Tubefilter chart, it will need at least one more week to once again move past the most significant round-number milestone it has ever reached. Meanwhile, the channels that make up the rest of our top five continued to jockey for position.
Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes finished the week of May 4 with 899.6 million views, a total that feels like it belongs in one of those unsatisfying video compilations. The children’s animation studio dipped back below 900 million after surpassing that threshold last week, but that slight dip in viewership was not nearly enough to upset Cocomelon’s position at the top of our chart. It scooped up about 240 million more views than runner-up T-Series, which continues to see its listed viewership fluctuate as it occasionally deletes or hides some of its videos. The Indian entertainment hub counted 653.9 million views during the end of April and beginning of May.
Falling behind these two YouTube juggernauts was another one based in the world’s second-most populous nation. SET India, fifth in our global chart last week, moved up to the #3 spot as the calendar moved into May. Sony’s South Asian hub received 574.1 million views over the measured period. Rounding out the top five are a pair of American family vlogs that boast eerily similar viewership. Like Nastya, in the #4 position, ended the week with 569.89 million views; Kids Diana Show, sitting at #5, managed 569.62 million views. So these two kids channels are separated by a margin that equals about .05% — yes point 05 percent — of their weekly viewership.
Ramez Majnun Rasmi is an Egyptian prank show hosted by actor Ramez Galal that airs on local TV network MBC. The show’s title translates to “Ramez is officially crazy,” and if you watch a clip from it, you’ll understand where that moniker comes from. In one widely-viewed clip, Galal straps a contestant into a chair that resembles the one Neo uses to plug into the Matrix, then taunts the contestant with scorpions and snakes.
Ramez Majnun Rasmi has been temporarily banned from the airwaves, but probably not for the reasons you’d think. While the Egyptian Media Syndicate has questioned the show’s “morality of content,” it has also claimed that Galal is not cleared to operate in Egypt, since MBC is based in the United Arab Emirates and filmed the show there, though it airs on MBC’s Egyptian channel. Though Galal has filed a lawsuit against the Syndicate, he cannot broadcast on any Egyptian media outlet until his status is resolved.
Which means, of course, that his fans must take to an American outlet instead. On YouTube, an MBC-owned channel featuring clips from Ramez Majnun Rasmi has soared upward in our charts, receiving 164.6 million views this week. In doing so, it achieved a 93% week-over-week viewership increase and jumped from 87th place to 24th. I shudder to think of the stunts Galal may pull on his show in his attempt to move even further up the charts.
