Rihanna, who has not released a new album since 2016, is still raking in career accolades with seemingly every other conceivable business venture.
And now, the songstress and beauty and fashion entrepreneur is set make a splash in the streaming industry, with a documentary feature directed by Peter Berg (Very Bad Things, Patriots Day). Amazon Prime paid a reported $25 million for global rights to the film, which is still untitled, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
That said, Amazon isn’t the only platform forking over serious change for an artist documentary. Last week, Apple TV+ announced a Billie Eilish project that it was also said to have paid $25 million for. That film will be produced in collaboration with Eilish’s record label, Interscope, according to the Reporter. Additionally, Netflix is readying a docuseries with Taylor Swift — though the financial details around that project have yet to emerge.

While little is known about the Rihanna film, Berg — who directed Rihanna in the action film Battleship — began working on it years ago, per the Reporter, and it will be whittled down from 1,200 hours of footage that will furnish insight into the 31-year-old’s sense of humor, work ethic, family dynamics, and romance.
“That was a fun change of pace…to go travel with Rihanna around Europe, and Rihanna is surrounded by girls,” Berg told the Reporter of the project. “We were in Nice [France]. She was going to do a concert on Bastille Day. And that truck driver who killed all those people plowed through them right in front of our hotel. So even in me trying to do something light, I had a very, very front-row seat to something that horrific.”
