Spotify And Disney Partner To Bring Mouse House Magic With New ‘Disney Hub’ Playlists

Disney has signed a deal to bring a little Mouse House magic to Spotify.

The duo have created the Disney Hub, a central location for collections of songs from classic and new Disney, Pixar, and Marvel films. Accessible to Spotify users in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, the hub features seven core playlists.

Those playlists, which each contain dozens of songs, include:

  • Disney Hits: Popular tunes from the media giant’s films.
  • Disney Favorites: Disney’s top-played songs from films old and new.
  • Disney Classics: Pure nostalgia here — this playlist includes songs played at Disney theme parks, tracks from classic films, and songs from Disney Channel original series and films.
  • Marvel Music: Everything from the original Iron Man theme to the epic sounds of the Avengers…you know, avenging.
  • Best of Star Wars: Featuring legendary composers John Williams and Michael Giacchino, this playlist brings together scores from films across the Star Wars franchise.
  • Disney Princess: Ariel, Moana, Mulan, and Elsa’s most powerful ballads.
  • Disney Singalongs: Exactly what’s on the tin.

Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

As TechCrunch points out, the deal is potentially a way for Spotify to attract more users to its Premium Family accounts, which cost $14.99 per month (as opposed to the solo account’s $9.99) and allow up to six unique users on one account — including, presumably, younger Disney fans.

The Disney Hub is also a way for Spotify to harness the already-massive listening power of Disney fans; the streamer told TechCrunch that users have streamed more than 2 billion minutes of Disney music on Spotify this year alone. Of all those hours, the most popular songs, perhaps unsurprisingly, are viral hit “Let it Go” from Frozen, and “A Whole New World” from the newly-released live-action version of Aladdin.

The hub, which can be found by searching “Disney” on Spotify, is also currently offering a playlist of music from the live-action remake of The Lion King. That film opens tomorrow.

While Disney is prepping to challenge some of the biggest companies in the streaming industry with the launch of its service Disney+ later this year, this deal appears to be an indication that it’s not also looking to take over the music streaming side of things.
