Malala Yousafzai’s Nonprofit Debuts YouTube Series ‘Roll Call’ Spotlighting Girls Around The World

Malala Fund, the nonprofit organization founded by Malala Yousafzai, today debuted its first YouTube series, Roll Call.

Yousafzai is the world’s youngest Nobel laureate and an activist for female education who famously survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012. Malala Fund primarily works to support activists who establish and protect secondary education opportunities for girls in developing nations.

In Roll Call’s first episode, Yousafzai introduces it as a series meant to give girls around the world a chance to tell their own stories in their own words. Each of the eight featured girls (who are from Brazil, India, Iraq, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Syria) have their own episode to give viewers a glimpse into their everyday lives, from school to friendships to family to their own personal goals.

The episode debuted today features 20-year-old Nibras, who moved to the U.S. in 2017 after ISIS invaded her northern Iraq village. In less than two years, she went from knowing zero English to being entirely fluent, and now she’s a university student studying to be an international human rights lawyer.

“I hope young women watching ‘Roll Call’ can see themselves in the girls who are featured in the series, and feel inspired to share their own stories and raise their voices for things that matter to them,” Bhumika Regmi, Malala Fund’s digital manager, said in a statement.

Yalin Solmaz, YouTube’s head of partnerships in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, added, “We are deeply honored that Malala Fund is tapping into the global community of the YouTube platform to raise awareness of their critical work in advocating for girls’ education — and to inspire young women to act on their goals and aspirations regardless of location or circumstance. We’re looking forward to seeing these inspiring stories come to life in the Roll Call series and beyond.”

Malala Fund will debut new episodes of Roll Call each Monday over the next two months.
