Netflix Cancels ‘American Vandal’ After Two Seasons, But It May Find A Home Elsewhere

Sad news, truth-seekers: Netflix has axed true crime mockumentary series American Vandal, bringing the hard-hitting adventures of (fictional) investigative documentarians Peter Maldonado and Sam Ecklund to an end.

“‘American Vandal’ will not return for a third season,” Netflix said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re very grateful to the creators, writers, cast and crew for bringing their innovative comedy to Netflix, and to the fans and critics who embraced its unique and unconventional humor.”

Vandal’s first season, which starred YouTuber Jimmy Tatro as Dylan, a troublemaking stoner accused of spray-painting 27 penises on cars in their school’s parking lot, premiered in 2017 to very positive reviews, and still holds a 98% approval rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes.

In the second season, Peter and Sam turn their newly honed skills on another school’s mystery: someone calling themself ‘The Turd Burgler’ spiked the cafeteria lemonade with laxatives, then posted videos of students suffering the aftermath on social media.

Season two debuted to similarly positive reviews, and currently holds a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making the reasoning behind Vandal’s cancellation less apparent than with Netflix’s other recent series-ending decisions. Namely, the cancellation of Marvel properties Iron Fist and Luke Cage, which likely has something to do with Disney cutting ties with Netflix in advance of launching its own streaming service (and the fact that they both underperformed their sibling series Daredevil and Jessica Jones).

However, Vandal fans shouldn’t lose all hope just yet. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the series’ producers have received “multiple calls” to discuss giving the show a third season elsewhere.
