A new Star Trek show is joining Star Trek Discovery on CBS’s VOD platform All Access. Sir Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) from 1987 to 1994 (and a few follow-up films), announced on Aug. 4 at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention that he’ll be reprising his role in a new series that’s part of CBS’s expanded Star Trek universe.
The series, which is the first new screen material for TNG since the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis, will reveal what Picard’s getting up to after the original series’ end. It will be helmed by Star Trek: Discovery co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who also worked on the scripts for Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness.
In a tweeted statement, Stewart said, “During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives, or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration, and leadership. I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason — to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times.”
No details yet on when the series is slated to stream, but whenever it does, there’s sure to be no shortage of fans ready to welcome their captain back to the bridge.
