YouTube Looking To Hugely Expand San Bruno HQ, Resulting In 10,000 New City Jobs Over Next 20 Years

YouTube is looking to massively expand its corporate headquarters in San Bruno, Calif. — to the tune of an additional 2.3 million square feet of office space that could ultimately result in 10,000 new city jobs over the next 20 years (the vast majority of which would be at YouTube, according to Google).

San Bruno community development director David Woltering presented four construction options for the public to consider on Tuesday evening with respect to the 980-acre area surrounding YouTube’s current offices, Business Insider reports — with more than 50 residents appearing to review the plans and share their concerns.

YouTube, which is the second most-visited website on the internet after Google, has been eyeing an expansion for some time, according to Business Insider, and last year spent more than $300 million to purchase 40 acres within the San Bruno Bayhill Office Park. YouTube’s current nearby offices comprise 900,00 square feet — though the company’s preferred plan would be add 2.3 million more. The three other proposals would allow for less office space, with more square footage allocated for retail, open space, and civic uses.

Woltering said that a draft plan could be completed by year’s end, and YouTube hopes to start construction by the end of 2019. The most common concerns expressed by residents included parking difficulties and an influx of traffic — which Woltering assuaged, according to Business Insider, by noting that new workers would arrive in the area gradually over a 20-year period.
