Universal Studios recently premiered Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again, a sequel to the ABBA-inspired 2008 movie musical Mamma Mia!. The film is named after its titular track, and to promote it, Universal and Portal A decided to thrust the music video for that song back into the spotlight. Portal A enlisted four YouTube stars — the two gents behind the musical duo Superfruit and the sisterly pair known as The Merrell Twins — for a shot-for-shot remake of ABBA’s original “Mamma Mia!” video.
The remake features some vintage outfits and bouncy dance moves in order to invoke the look and feel of 1975, when the song first came out. While the new video is fun on its own, it gets even better when you pop it into the YouTube Doubler, where you can really see how exact of a remake it is.
“This campaign brings together so many fun elements,” said Portal A co-founder Zach Blume, “from the classic look and sound of Abba, to an endearing film franchise like Mamma Mia, to the talent and energy the Merrell Twins and Superfruit brought to the production. We’ve been describing this project as ‘retro-fabulous.’”
This is not the first time Portal A has teamed up with Universal Studios to help the production company promote one of its movies. Back when Pitch Perfect 3 came out, for example, Portal A turned to Todrick Hall, who sang some of the film’s tunes across four voices.
Even if this is the only branded video The Merrell Twins and Superfruit make in support of the Mamma Mia! sequel, I’d love to see more creators take a crack at an ABBA music video. After all, most of the Swedish foursome’s hits look the same.
