We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.
A web series based in Israel is exploring the conversations of couples with haiku-like simplicity. It’s called Pillow Talk, it comes from creators Micah Smith and Ezra Ani, and it offers exactly what its title suggests: Brief post-coital conversations between a pair of bickering lovebirds.
Every detail of Pillow Talk is minimalist in nature. Its characters, portrayed by Ani and Elya Yerushlamy, are only ever referred to as Him and Her, and they are shot in still, suggestive poses, with the camera never moving beyond their bed. Individual episodes rarely break a minute in length, but across that short runtime, they are able to say a lot. The first episode poignantly explores the sort of emotional dance that will be familiar to anyone in a long-term relationship.
On the whole, Pillow Talk episodes are exquisitely crafted and range from deeply philosophical to droll and mundane. If you jibe with the show’s unique format, you can find new episodes of it every week on Facebook.
