Indie Spotlight: ‘Driver Ed’ Tries To Live Up To His Title

We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.

A gent who misleads his internet girlfriend looks to atone for his mistakes in a new web series. The show is called Driver Ed, and it’s created by Jacob A. Ware, a veteran of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

Driver Ed begins with Ed (portrayed by Ware) facing a dilemma. He’s meeting his lady friend for the first time, but she’s expecting him to be an ace race car driver. In reality, he doesn’t even know how to drive, so he looks to rectify that situation by passing a driving exam before she arrives.

After it initially premiered at the Tribeca Film FestivalDriver Ed is now available online. You can find the first three episodes of it on Vimeo:

While other web comedies look to win viewers with outlandish scenarios and over-the-top personalities, Driver Ed thrives on its subtlety. The series is filled with clever sight gags that accentuate a well-constructed script. This is, overall, a smartly crafted piece of work, and we can only hope that more is on the way.

OTHER UNDER-THE-RADAR SERIES TO CHECK OUT

  • Molly and Pip. The misadventures of two best friends play out across a series of Instagram shorts.
  • The Last Act. Norman Lear is one of the elders interviewed about living life to the fullest.
