Caspar Lee Launches Educational Scholarship At His Former South African School

Comedy creator Caspar Lee, who is one of the most successful vloggers to emerge from South Africa, is looking to give back to the school where he came of age.

Lee, 23, has launched an educational scholarship at Oakhill School in his home town of Knysna. Lee attended Oakhill on an academic scholarship, he says, and given that he attributes much of his success to lessons learned there, he decided to pay it forward. “[Oakhill] supported my creativity, it helped me a lot with my education, and made me the person I am today,” Lee said in an announcement video (below).

The first-ever Oakhill scholarship recipient is Indiphile Witbooi, whose tuition and other expenses will be covered. While the exact amount of the annual scholarship is not being disclosed, a rep for Lee says it amounts to five figures. Lee shared Witbooi’s acceptance speech in his latest video. “I’m one step closer to being successful and achieving my goals and dreams,” she says, “and I’m really grateful for this — its been a big impact on my life.”

Lee said he wants to do “so many more things like this over the next few years.” Oakhill students will be invited to apply for the scholarship every year, and he will work with the school to select future recipients. In addition to his altruism and grueling content output, Lee is also pursuing entrepreneurship full throttle. Last summer, he invested in the influencer marketing agency Influencer, and concurrently joined the London-based upstart as its chief innovation officer.
