We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.
Two days after Valentine’s Day, many who found themselves without dates are still smarting, beset by rejection and singledom. For those lovelorn individuals, the Broken Hearts Division can be a pick me up. That’s the name of the unit at the center of a new web series created by Nicole Feenstra.
The officer who runs the Broken Hearts Division is Mack, portrayed by Feenstra. Mack will go to any length to ensure the heartbroken get the justice they deserve. In the first episode, for example, she assists a man whose social media-obsessed girlfriend has dumped him. As the show goes on, she continues her quest to find her true enemy, known only as the “Serial Dater.”
Like another cop comedy, FOX’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Broken Hearts Division repurposes the beats, musical cues, and attitude of classic police serials in order to hammer home its jokes. Mack’s insistence that “assault with a deadly text” be classified as an actual infraction turns into a strong running joke, and there’s plenty more effective gags along the way. Keep an eye on the Broken Hearts Division YouTube channel to see new episodes as they arrive.
