With Elsagate in full swing, it’s been a trying moment for YouTube, which continues to grapple with videos touting violent and sexual themes aimed at young children. This holiday season, however, the video giant is looking to refashion its image and spread some holiday cheer by making available five YouTube Red series to YouTube Kids viewers for free.
While a YouTube Red subscription typically costs $10 per month, the following family-friendly series will be available free of charge beginning tomorrow through Jan. 2: DanTDM Creates A Big Scene, Hyperlinked, Fruit Ninja: Frenzy Force, We Are Savvy, and Kings Of Atlantis. This is the first time that YouTube Red has given away any of its series in full. The offer will be available in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and more, with subtitled episodes available in Latin America, Korea, and France.
In order to watch more recent child-themed YouTube Red shows, however — like Roman Atwood’s Day Dreams — viewers will have to subscribe.
The free offer arrives at a tenuous time for YouTube, which said last month that it had removed approximately 150,000 inappropriate children’s videos and terminated massively popular channels like Toy Freaks, as top brands including Mars, Adidas, and Deutsche Bank subsequently pulled their ad spend in response to the disturbing clips. CEO Susan Wojcicki announced earlier this week that the company would hire 10,000 people to prevent future offenses.
