Former Fullscreen Content Exec Jason Kwong Named Chief Strategy Officer At Redbox

Jason Kwong, who served as Fullscreen’s SVP of programming planning, acquisitions, and strategy for a total of three years ending in September, has joined Redbox as its chief strategy and business development officer.

It is unclear whether Kwong, who was formerly in charge of content acquisition, exited Fullscreen in the wake of layoffs last month in which the company said it was cutting 3% of its staff to re-frame the programming strategy for its eponymous subscription service around originals, according to Variety. At the automated DVD kiosk provider, Kwong will lead strategic partnerships and oversee new business initiatives, reporting to Redbox CEO Galen Smith out of the company’s Washington headquarters.

Prior to joining Fullscreen, Kwong worked at Netflix, where he served as director of content acquisition for U.S. film deals.

“Jason brings deep digital entertainment expertise to our executive management team,” Smith said in a statement. Redbox says it clocks, on average, 1 million film and game rentals per day, and intends to install 1,500 additional kiosks this year for a total of 41,500 nationwide. Redbox also recently inked new distribution deals with with Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and Lionsgate, according to Variety.
