The World’s Third Most Visited Porn Site Wants To Give Canceled Netflix Series ‘Sense8’ A New Home

xHamster, as the world’s third most visited pornography site, has the sort of user base big media companies covet. The Cyprus-based hub is the 75th most visited website in the entire world, according to Alexa, and it claims to have an audience that eclipses outlets like ESPN and The New York Times.

What does xHamster want to do with the revenue it’s generating from all those users? Like many other players in the world of web video, it wants to go into original programming. It has authored an open letter to The Matrix directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski in which it suggests its own website as the new home for their cancelled Netflix series Sense8.

xHamster’s letter is a response to Lana Wachowski’s announcement that she is writing a third season of Sense8 even though Netflix canceled the sci-fi drama in June. The tale of a group of strangers who find themselves mentally and emotionally linked retains a serious cult following in spite of its cancellation. Sense8‘s fanbase is so passionate that it managed to convince Netflix to bring the series back for a two-hour special that will air in 2018, though the streamer has announced no plans to continue the show beyond that.

Enter xHamster. In its open letter, the porn site alleged it has “the eyeballs and the revenue” to keep Sense8

going. The series has received particular acclaim for its representation of LGBTQ characters, and xHamster, as a long-time champion of LGBTQ rights, believes it understands the messages and the themes The Wachowskis are conveying through their show. “We know that a series about polymorphous perversity is a hard sell for a mainstream network like Netflix,” reads the open letter. “We have no such limitations, and also understand implicity (sic) the interconnectedness of sexualities across boundaries.”

Some people may laugh at the idea of a porn site becoming a major player in the world of online video, but xHamster’s offer is a serious one. “Five years ago, people laughed at the idea of Netflix producing original series,” reads the letter. “We think that our time, like yours, has come.”

If you’re wondering whether xHamster has what it takes to be Sense8‘s new producer and distributor, note that this would not be the website’s first original series. Last year, it produced The Sex Factor, a ten-episode reality series in which amateurs competed for the opportunity to become porn stars. The homepage for that show is most definitely NSFW (unless, I suppose, you work at xHamster) and can be found here.
