Instagram Will Organize Comments Into Threads To Make Them Easier To Follow

If Instagram comments currently read like something of an unintelligible mess, the photo and video-sharing platform is taking steps to make the commentary that appears underneath posts slightly easier to follow.

In the same way that comments function on parent company Facebook, Instagram will now be turning comments into threads — meaning that when users reply to a comment, the response will be indented and grouped underneath into a separate conversation. Right now, all comments — including responses — appear underneath one another in a block of text.

Some Android users reported seeing the new feature being tested back in June. Threads will arrive globally on version 24 of Instagram on both iOS and Android in coming weeks, the company said.

“Comment threads help you keep track of conversations and make it easy to respond to a specific thread,” Instagram wrote in a blog post. “This update will make your feed an even better place to share interests, get inspired, and connect with others.”

Last month, Instagram also announced that it was seeking to use advances in artificial intelligence to root out abusive speech in the comments section.
