Ahead of Germany’s election next month, four high-profile YouTube stars are set to interview Chancellor Angela Merkel at the YouTube Space Berlin in a bid to engage their younger audiences in the political process.
The online event is part of a campaign called #DeineWahl (which translates to ‘Your Choice’) — and viewers are invited to submit questions for Chancellor Merkel on social media using that hashtag. German-headquartered multi-channel network Studio71 will produce and stream the live, hourlong event, which will take place tomorrow at 9:30 am ET.
The YouTube stars slated to participate include: political and social issues vlogger Mirko ‘MrWissen2go’ Drotschmann; 21-year-old fashion, beauty, and lifestyle creator Ischtar Isik; aspiring filmmaker Alexander ‘AlexiBexi’ Böhm; and journalist Lise ‘ItsColeslaw’ Sophie.
“Chancellor Merkel is validating the voice of an entire generation by embracing the power of social media to interact with young adults,” Studio71’s global CEO Reza Izad said in a statement.
The event will air on the Deine Wahl YouTube channel, as well as on the channels of the above creators — who, collectively, count roughly 3 million subscribers. This isn’t the first time that Chancellor Merkel has engaged with Germany’s YouTube community. In 2015, she sat down for an interview with digital commentator Florian ‘LeFloid’ Mundt in a video that generated 5.5 million views.
Studio71, which is owned by the German mass media company ProSiebenSat.1, clocks 7 billion monthly video views and reps 1,300 total channels, including top American creators like Lilly Singh, Rhett & Link, and Logan Paul.
