Drag icon RuPaul, who currently headlines the hit reality competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race on VH1, could soon be getting the scripted treatment.
A dramedy called Queen is currently in development at Hulu, which will chronicle a fictionalized version of the performer’s rise to fame in New York in the Reagan era. The series will be produced by J.J. Abrams and written by Gary Lennon (Power, Orange Is The New Black), according to The Hollywood Reporter. Executive producers include Abrams, RuPaul (whose real name is RuPaul Andre Charles), Ben Stephenson of Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, and Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato of World Of Wonder — the production company behind Drag Race.
After moving to New York in the ’80s, RuPaul became a staple on the club scene and then released the hit single Supermodel (You Better Work). He also hosted a short-lived VH1 talk show called The RuPaul Show in the late ‘90s.

Bad Robot currently has another show in the works at Hulu — a compendium series called Castle Rock that will explore the themes and characters of Stephen King’s literary canon. Like Queen, Castle Rock is also being created by Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television — who collaborated on Hulu’s James Franco-starring series 11.22.63.
