We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.
What happens when you let two trendy restauranteurs make their own web series? You get Last Meal. Aaron and Jessica Grimmer are the couple behind a show that imagines encounters with the Grim Reaper as elaborate dinner parties.
Last Meal follows the son of Death incarnate as he teams up with his wife to host locals for the final feasts of their lives. Most of the chatter that follows is innocent enough to occur at any dinner party, albeit with a surreal, macabre pall hanging over the proceedings. The first guest who meets her end at the hands of the Grimmers (that does seem to be their real last name, by the way) is comedian Sabrina Jalees, who based on her Twitter account does still appear to be kicking in real life.
The Grimmers are successful restauranteurs in Portland, where they own a pair of thriving locations. As you might expect, a big reason to watch Last Meal is for the food porn it provides, but don’t sleep on the show’s unusual blend of dark humor. After all, sleep is the cousin of death.

- Dislawderly. The ins and outs of New Zealand law school serve as the grounds for comedy.
- Synesthesia. While rough around the edges, this project presents some interesting visuals.
