Maroon 5 frontman and The Voice coach Adam Levine paid tribute to the late YouTube musician Christina Grimmie earlier this week on the hit singing competition show, with a touching rendition of Hey Jude. Levine was Grimmie’s coach during season 6 of The Voice, when she came in third place.
“God, I loved her so much,” Levine said to Grimmie’s family, who was in the audience, per People. “I am talking to you guys specifically, I’m talking to everybody. I miss her. It is unfair she is not here.”
In addition to the tribute, The Voice host Carson Daly also announced the establishment of the Christina Grimmie Foundation, which will provide financial and emotional support to those impacted by gun violence as well as breast cancer — which Grimmie’s mother has fought. (In February, the Grimmie family donated proceeds from Invisible, her first posthumous single, in order to launch a memorial fund). “Christina, we feel your spirit here at The Voice every single day and we love and miss you dearly,” Daly said on the show.

Grimmie was shot and killed by a fan while signing autographs after a tour stop in Orlando in June. Last Friday, she released an EP titled Side B in partnership with Republic Records, which will be followed by a full-length album called All Is Vanity on June 2 — National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Grimmie, an animal advocate, was also honored at a Humane Society gala in Los Angeles last weekend.
