Mobile live streaming was arguably the most significant online video trend of 2016, and as technology continues to improve, the digital-mobile broadcasting boon is expected to continue. The latest version of Cisco’s Mobile Visual Networking Index projects that, by 2021, mobile live video will eat up a whopping 2.02 exabytes of data, which is equivalent to 2.2 billion gigabytes.
The report indicates that mobile live video consumption reached 52 petabytes of data in 2016, which equals 52 million gigabytes. Should the projected 2021 figure be accurate, mobile live video will be close to 39 times bigger in five years than it is today. The rate at which the industry is expected to grow is laid out in a chart shared as part of Cisco’s forecast.
While the mobile live video boom itself will likely be massive, it will be part of a greater increase in mobile data usage across multiple formats. As Cisco projects, data connections will get stronger, more consumers will have access to mobile devices, and a greater portion of the data usage generated by those devices will be video-related. In total, mobile devices are forecasted to use 587 exabytes of data by 2021.
Even as general mobile data usage increases, however, mobile live video looks like it will begin to consume a bigger piece of the pie than it currently does. For more details from Cisco’s findings, head over to the tech company’s website.
