Adi Shankar, Frederator Studios Reportedly Developing ‘Castlevania’ Series Adaptation

Noted Hollywood film producer and YouTube creator Adi Shankar is reportedly working on an animated digital series based on the Castlevania video game franchise in collaboration with Frederator Studios.

Castlevania is a series of fantasy games created by Japanese entertainment giant Konami that tells the story of a clan of vampire hunters waging battle against Dracula. Shankar’s adaptation is said to be “super violent,” according to The A.V. Club. The 31-year-old has served as an executive producer on bold-faced films including The Grey, Dredd, Broken City, Lone Survivor, and A Walk Among Tombstones. Late last year, Shankar — whose YouTube shorts have received millions of views — also inked a three-film deal with Maker Studios.

Animation studio Frederator, which was acquired by Rainmaker Entertainment

in October and is also behind popular series including Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and Nickelodeon’s The Fairly OddParents, owns the adaptation rights to Castlevania, according to The A.V. Club. Frederator founder Fred Seibert suggested that the project may be in the works during a recent Nick Animation podcast interview.

“We have a project now that we’re doing — that needs to go unnamed — based on one of the most world-famous video games of the last 30 years, that we’ve had in our shop for 12 years without being able to get it started,” Seibert said. “But there were great characters, and a great story, and eventually we got it going.”
