With The “Curiosity Box,” Vsauce Supports Hands-On Exploration

Across three channels, Vsauce demystifies science, mechanics, math, and other academic concepts for its millions of subscribers. The network’s videos are fueled by the deep curiosity of its three hosts — Michael Stevens, Kevin Lieber, and Jake Roper — and in 2016, those hosts launched a project that is letting their fans explore their own desires to discover new things. It’s called the Curiosity Box, and it’s a quarterly subscription-based box that has become a hot seller among Vsauce subscribers.

Each Curiosity Box is filled with 6-9 gifts that add up to a total value of at least $85. As Stevens tells Tubefilter, the featured items cover a wide range of subjects, including “math, physics, chemistry, sound, taste, biology, outer space, physiology, art, history, engineering, robotics, [and] literature.” The first box, announced back in September, included an instrument that demonstrates vapor-liquid equilibrium and a full transcript of communications from the first manned moon mission, among other goodies.

“We’ve always thought about how we could take the Vsauce experience off the screen and into reality,” Roper told Tubefilter. “How we could make curiosity and discovery something tangible and interactive while still maintaining our passion and love for exploring. A subscription box seemed like the perfect way to bring all of these ideas together.”

As Vsauce has rolled out more iterations of the Curiosity Box, it has found new ways to integrate the items it features into its content. On December 10th, Stevens shared a video about a gyroscope and added that gizmo into the latest Box. The result? A sellout.

The Curiosity Box, however, is not just a new revenue stream for Vsauce. A portion of all revenue raised by the Boxes will go to Alzheimer’s research. “The hope is that the Curiosity Box is fun but also has value,” Roper told Tubefilter. “More than just a monetary value, but an educational value. The Box is also a great way for us to raise money for charity, specifically for Alzheimer’s research which is very important to us personally. After this quarter, because of the boxes, we will have raised over $62,000 for Alzheimer’s research. As the box grows, so will that number.”

If you’d like to add to Vsauce’s campaign for medical research while getting your hands on some fascinating gadgets, you can sign up now to receive the next Curiosity Box. Quarterly, half-yearly, and yearly plans are all available, beginning at $49.90 per month.
