Issa Rae Gets Golden Globe Nomination For Role In Her HBO Show

The nominees for the 2017 Golden Globe Awards were announced on December 12th, and a talented woman who got her start as a self-made online video star has earned some awards season consideration. Issa Rae, the creator and lead actress of HBO’s Insecure is nominated in the Globes’ Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical.

Rae is well-known in online video circles as the creative force behind the comedy web series Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl. For years, she tried to parlay the success of that show in a TV program before Insecure premiered in October 2016. Driven by many of the same elements that made Awkward Black Girl a hit — in particular a comedic approach to race and gender issues in modern society — Rae’s HBO show scored strong marks from critics during its maiden season.

For Rae to score a Globes nomination is a big deal. Few creators have successfully transitioned from the Internet to the world of prestige television, and fewer still have managed to pull off that feat while maintaining the sort of strong, independent streak that has served as a hallmark of Rae’s work on the Internet. The amount of effort and passion she puts into her shows is immediately apparent, and she is being justly rewarded for her work.

It would be an even bigger deal if she ends up winning at the Golden Globes, but that will be a tall task. She’s up against a talented field of actresses, including Veep star Julia Louis- Dreyfus and last year’s Globe winner, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star Rachel Bloom. Bloom as fate would have it, also got her start on the Internet. Take note, Hollywood.
