Description: Minority actors are often reduced to token roles in films and TV shows. Susane Lee knows that truth, because she’s one of those actors; she has performed on shows like Gilmore Girls, The Shield, Grey’s Anatomy, often in a role that holds up perceived Asian-American stereotypes. Now, with SusaneLand, she’ll be the leading lady.

SusaneLand, created by and starring Lee, will illustrate important moments in her life in order to both provide a strong role for an Asian-American woman and explore what it means to be a minority in the entertainment industry. The moments (there will be six of them) will be shared through vignettes that will be funny, energetic, and much weirder than you might expect at first glance.

“We love subtle, dark, and surreal comedies,” writes Lee on her project’s Indiegogo page. “We also love looking at human nature. With susaneLand we hope to do both.”

Creator Bio: Lee is, by her own admission, “the token Asian girl.” In 2013, she highlighted her experiences in the acting world with a comedic music video called “Dream Big.”

Best Perk: Backers who chip in at least $15 will receive SusaneLand stickers. If we “stick together,” the campaign page tells us, we can get this show off the ground.

Why You Should Fund It: Lee is hardly the first actor to use the web series format as a means of exploring the topic of representation in media, but her take on that subject is certainly unique. As her pitch video shows, she will incorporate elements of hip-hop as well as a fresh visual style that looks to deliver plenty of delights.

Ultimately, SusaneLand is a story about race and gender, but it’s also looking like it’s going to be an entertaining vehicle through which Lee can display her talents. She only needs a little bit more support before she can show us what she has in mind.
