‘Grandma’s Boy’ Creators Reunite For Comedy Central Web Series

It’s been ten years since the release of Grandma’s Boy, and over that decade, the comedy film has managed to carve out a cult following for itself. Fans of that movie can now rejoice; its co-star and co-written, Nick Swardson, has reunited with its director, Nicholaus Goossen, for a Comedy Central web series called Typical Rick.

In Typical Rick, Swardson stars as Gary, a schlubby wannabe actor who moves to Los Angeles and finds that his dreams of becoming a famous movie star are impeded not just by his own lack of skill but also by his roommate Rick (Simon Rex

), whose own charm causes him to upstage Gary at every turn. In the first episode, Gary and Rick visit a headshot photographer, who dismisses Gary and his ugly turtleneck in favor of Rick’s good looks.

The “aspiring actor fails his way through L.A.” plot has been done to death at this point, but Typical Rick is a particularly funny entry into that canon. It combines the ridiculous situations of a typical web series with the same sort of over-the-top characters and flagrantly dumb jokes that have allowed Grandma’s Boy to endure as a cult classic. If you’re not a fan of that film, you might as well skip Typical Rick; the rest of us will be busy laughing our way through its six episodes.
