Description: Many independent web series boast strong representation of LGBTQ characters, but few shows deliver as nuanced portraits of their queer protagonists as Couple-ish. Kaitlyn Alexander‘s series, which revolves around a gender-neutral protagonist, her sister, and her roommate, examines a tangled web of interpersonal relationships with a skilled and thoughtful approach. After a successful first season, which earned a nomination at the 2016 Streamy AwardsCouple-ish is looking to run it back for another go — so long as it can get the crowdfunded assistance it needs.

Alexander stars as Dee, a queer individual who must get a common-law marriage with her roommate Rachel, who is hoping to dodge deportation. Meanwhile, Dee’s sister Amy has her own feelings for Rachel. What follows is a smart comedy with a modern sensibility and a refreshing frank take on the LGBTQ characters at its center.

Based on what Alexander has revealed thus far, the next season of Couple-ish will feature ever stronger production values to keep up with its continued character work. As the show’s official Twitter notes, “It’s here, it’s incredibly queer, and we need your help to make another season possible.”

Creator Bio: Alexander has appeared on the cult-hit web series Carmilla. On their YouTube channel, which has more than 38,000 subscribers, they offer up everything from vlogs to music to interviews with fellow creators.

Best Perk: Backers who chip in at least $25 will receive a digital pic of “Deechel,” the official slash-fiction name for the pairing between Couple-ish‘s two leads. I guess Rachee doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

Why You Should Fund It: The cast and crew of Couple-ish are both packed with talent. Beyond Alexander, writer RJ Lackie has found digital success of his own thanks to his status as the creator of another Streamy-nominated series, All For One.

When all of Couple-ish‘s talented creators, stars, and crew people came together for the show’s first season, the result was an undeniable hit that executed its vision with panache. With everyone on board for season two and some fresh faces set to join the fun, there’s no reason why Couple-ish shouldn’t be able to provide another set of funny, poignant episodes.
