YouTuber Lana McKissack Stars In First Web Series From New Sci-Fi Video Platform Recursor

A new digital hub is appealing to fans of indie science-fiction. It’s called Recursor.TV, and it features a collection of curated short and films as well as an original web series called Nina_Unlocked, which stars YouTuber Lana McKissack as an android who recently rebooted herself after previously serving as a robotic assassin.

A visit to Recursor’s website reveals a collection of visually-intriguing projects, which are grouped into sub-genres like “Alien Encounter,” “Cyberpunk Noir,” and “Post Apocalyptic.” While many new niche platforms have employed subscription-based models, Recursor’s content is free, with individual videos routed through external players like YouTube and Vimeo. With that model, Recursor can shine its spotlight on the class of up-and-coming filmmakers it wishes to champion.

“This is a golden era for hard science fiction, and we’re thrilled to be premiering the first video platform devoted to the genre,” said Recursor CEO E.J. Kavounas in a press release. “Recursor showcases cutting-edge work by independent filmmakers and artists in an environment designed to deeply engage audiences.”

Kavounas is also the creator of Nina_Unlocked, which serves as Recursor’s first original series. The show’s first episode was timed to coincide with the launch of its host platform, and it’s good stuff. Led by McKissack, Nina_Unlocked is an thoughtful, darkly funny show with plenty of engaging visuals and special effects. It’s a bit reminiscent of the award-winning film Ex Machina — and I get the feeling Kavounas and co. would be proud of that comparison.

More episodes of Nina_Unlocked will arrive in the fall. Recursor also plans to launch a contest related to an original film project, and it is accepting submissions from independent creators.
