Warner Bros Is Giving Japanese Pop-Metal Group Babymetal An Animated Web Series

Thanks to their intense music and high-energy live shows, the three young women of the Japanese group Babymetal have become internationally famous. Now, they’re adding some animation to the mix as well. Warner Bros’ Blue Ribbon Content and Amuse USA have announced their plan to create an animated web series in which the members of Babymetal enter “the magical world of heavy metal music.”

If you’ve never heard Babymetal’s music, you’re missing out; it’s an odd-yet-completely-satisfying mashup of Japanese pop and modern heavy metal. Since the group’s inception in 2010, it has toured the globe, selling out arenas wherever it goes. Babymetal’s latest coup is a spot on the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s upcoming UK tour, where it will be an opening act.

The animated series will dive into the heavy metal lore Babymetal professes during its live shows. In a setup that sounds like it’s somewhere between Tenacious D, Power Rangers, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, a god named Kitsune will bring Babymetal together and implore them to save the world with the awesome power of their music. The group will travel between live-action and animated universes, delivering new performances in the former and acting as a “warrior band” in the latter.

For Blue Ribbon Content, which serves as Warner Bros.’ digital studio, the Babymetal series will be the latest in a line of scripted projects. While Blue Ribbon has distributed its work on a wide range of platforms (ranging from Go90 to Oculus Rift), the destination at which viewers will be able to access the upcoming Babymetal series has not yet been revealed.
