Description: Black Mirror has shown it is possible to marry the old-school, serialized thrills of The Twilight Zone with a sermon about technology. Now, The Art of Dumping will attempt to accomplish something similar. Amy Leonard‘s planned web series will examine breakups of all shapes and sizes while throwing it plenty of far-out swerves along the way.
According to its Indiegogo page, The Art of Dumping will be a show that “takes dating stories and throws them into the outer limits of reality.” We can only assume that description is referencing the 60s TV show The Outer Limits, which is often compared to The Twilight Zone and is particularly famous for its wild twists. Basically, we know Art of Dumping is gonna get weird, but it remains to be seen what direction that weirdness will take. The first episode, for example, will be about “ghosting,” and I can only hope it will feature actual ghosts.
Leonard’s influences are more diverse than just old, suspenseful TV. In the Art of Dumping pitch video, she notes her love of The X-Files, Seinfeld, and several other shows.
Creator Bio: Leonard has produced several music videos. She is using one of them, for a song called “With The Night In Our Eyes,” to showcase her fondness for absurdist filmmaking.
Best Perk: Anyone who chips in at least $100 will receive receive a “mystery message” from a member of the Art of Dumping cast. There’s no word on what the message says, but I’m guessing it’s a little more complex than “hi.”
Why You Should Fund It: We’ve seen plenty of web series about breakups and the effects they have on modern daters, but it’s always nice to see creators who are eager to take risks within familiar territory. The Art of Dumping, with its promises of eccentric visuals, fresh points of view, and unusual-yet-familiar characters, seems like it falls squarely into that category. It’s hard to get a clear idea of what this show will look like, as we only have a few short clips and Leonard’s previous work to tell us what to expect. Even so, there’s a lot of potential here, and for me, that alone merits a close look.
