Legendary Plans Subscription Video Service For Nerdist, Geek & Sundry

Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist and Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry are the two most prominent digital brands owned by Legendary, and now, an upcoming service will unite them. Legendary Digital Networks has announced a subscription video platform called Alpha, which will feature exclusive originals from both of the aforementioned nerd culture content hubs.

Alpha will feature new shows from Nerdist and Geek & Sundry as well as several returning programs. The platform will also take a page out of Twitch’s book by encouraging interactive live broadcasts fueled by chats and polls. In addition, subscribers will receive several perks, such as VIP event access, prizes, and product discounts.

“I’m seeing a lot of companies putting genre-style content behind paywalls and I’m not sure that offering alone is entirely exciting or compelling for the audience, especially when this type of programming is freely available all over the Internet,” said Hardwick in a press release. “While scripted and interactive video will be just one component of Alpha, we are setting out to make this more of a holistic membership experience that will feel like a community clubhouse. We want it to be special and have real, justifiable value for members, e.g., live event access, merch, IRL meet-ups and bonus podcasts to name a few things. Alpha is about partnering people we love to create a safe space for fandom and the people who are passionate about it.”

Legendary has not announced an exact release date for Alpha, nor has it shared any pricing details for the platform’s subscriptions. We only know that the venture is currently slated to debut “later in 2016.”
